So… How’s E3 Going? Oh, inFAMOUS 2 is Out?

June 8th, 2011 -

Chris and Ryan are seemingly having fun, as I browse the photobucket and see what they’ve done… Met some famous people (one of which being a hero of Ryan’s), played some games (see a few on youtube here), and are enjoying what we are not. Am I jealous? Eh, a bit. But I’ve been playing inFAMOUS 2, which is more than keeping me busy. In fact, I’ll go ahead and tell you a bit about it later on here.

I suppose I should mention the Wii U, which rhymes with 2. It was shown at the Nintendo press conference yesterday, and boasts having multiplatform games (though actual visuals are yet to be determined – the reel of games they showed consisted of PS3, 360, and PC footage only). What I’m interested to see is if they add exclusive features for the system in these games. What kind of features? Well, I don’t know. What if an FPS was like an arcade, in that when you want to look through your sights, you look at the controller so you see the cross hairs, and people watching the tv just see the gun as normal. A bad example, but it’s a possibility. I’d really like to see it utilize an upgraded version of what the Dreamcast VMU and the Playstation Pocket Station did for their games. Obviously it’ll do a lot more than that, but it’d be a nice start for exclusive system content…

So what else is happening at the expo? Well, Chris and Ryan swung by the Atlus area for me, and snagged a couple shots of the booth. Funny thing is they were apparently stared at as if they didn’t belong. I guess Atlus fans can tell who other fans are… Haha, in any case, Devil Survivor 2 was announced for the US at the event to be released in 2012 – it will be on the DS once again. For those unaware, Devil Survivor is a spin off in the Megami Tensei series. These games often have Shin Megami Tensei in the title nowadays. If you still don’t get it, Persona is a part of SMT, and is one of my favorite RPG series’ ever.

Catherine, one of my most anticipated games of the year, has received two nominations (as of me writing this) for best game of E3. Pretty much any game you can think of that seems like it’ll be out soon is being demoed this week, and hopefully we’ll have some impressions soon (assuming Ryan can find some wifi to upload their podcasts they’ve recorded).

So now, let’s break off from that and talk about inFAMOUS 2 for a little bit. I’m not sure if you played the first, but if you haven’t, this is a platformer from the people that made the Sly Cooper series, so they have a good grasp on 3D platforming (if you didn’t see, Sly 4 was officially announced at E3). Beyond that, they’ve now seen how to work with super powers and have greatly refined the gameplay as well as controls in this sequel. I’ve run into a few glitches, though they aren’t too bad. Getting crushed by air is amusing, unless of course you are doing something really difficult. But then you see they made the game easier by adding checkpoints within missions. Oh… well, it’s nice for keeping frustration low, but it makes the game a joke. Haha

The new powers are a nice addition to the game, and make it have replay value depending on what you choose to go with. The visuals of the game are much more defined this time around, and the overall gameplay makes you feel a lot more like… a superhero, I suppose. Being able to switch between different styles of attacks are also welcome, and unlocking them are rather entertaining, though not time consuming at all. I’m over halfway done with the game now (got it yesterday), or halfway done with my Hero playthrough, at least. I can honestly say that I am glad I spent the money on it, despite the fact I’ll be done within a week or so (depending on the weather… if it gets much hotter, my PS3 will be useless). Full review will be up when I platinum it. As of now, it’s a Buy if you loved the first.
