Sony’s Cross Buy Is Leading By Example

August 14th, 2012 -

At GamesCom this morning Sony announced a “new” feature for PS3/Vita users. It’s called Cross Buy and you may have already heard of it.

Cross Buy is essentially an expansion of the Cross Play feature that’s already on the Vita. Cross Play allows owners of the same game on PS3/Vita to transfer saves between the two devices and continue play either at home or on the go. While that is a neat feature, it requires the owner have two copies of the same game on two systems. Now with Cross Buy, the cost is a little easier to handle. Sony has announced today that with the purchase of Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assualt, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, and PlayStation All Stars: Battle Royale on one system, you’ll get the other version free with it. Bought the PS3 version? Get the Vita version with it. These titles are not the first to do this though. Sound Shapes, which just launched recently utilizes Cross Buy, although not specifically called that. We’ve talked about this concept before on one of our weekly podcasts and decided that Sony really needed to lead by example with this concept in order for it to work. It seems they’re doing just that. Hopefully third party developers take the initiative and have their titles Cross Buy compatible in the future. Only time will tell. Stay tuned to FFoP for more GamesCom coverage this week.

  • I found this out when I bought Sound Shapes today on my Vita and there was the PS3 version on my download list! Brilliant idea. I was a bit miffed I had to spen the best part of £60 on MGS HD collection. Not that I mind. They are pretty awesome like.
