Become a part of gaming history and help fund their Kickstarter! We did, and you should too! Also, we kinda wanna see them hit the 4 player battle mode stretch goal.

What is Shovel Knight?

Shovel Knight is a love letter to the 8-16bit era of gaming. The main game play mechanics are centered around your shovel. You can use it as: a sword to attack enemies, a shovel dig up treasure,  a pogo stick to bounce, a shovel again to dig dirt blocks to proceed past obstacles, and a lightsaber to deflect enemy projectiles. Shovel Knight could also be categorized as a platformer, which is where it draws most of its Mega Man inspiration. The game also features the classic page scrolling screen transitions, made famous by Mega Man. Developed by Yacht Club Games, Shovel Knight is set to release sometime this fall (estimated based on Kickstarter’s delivery date).

Why should I care?

Because games like this don’t come along very often. There are plenty of “classic” or “retro” indie games that get made each year, but most of them do not stay as “true to the era” like Shovel Knight. Yacht Club games is comprised of former and current Wayforward employees, who have made a career out of making retro revival games like: Contra 4, Double Dragon NeonAdventure Time “Hey Ice King, why did you steal our garbage?”, and the soon to be released HD remaster of Duck Tales. Clearly, they know their way around classic game design. A fact that is further proven by Shovel Knight’s attention to era specific details.

Shovel Knight looks fantastic, and multiple members of the FFoP Team have already contributed to the Kickstarter. We don’t always push Kickstarters on you, but when we do…
