Far-Cry-3-hangglider

Have you been eagerly anticipating the release of the new Far Cry? I know I have. 3 was one of the best experiences I’ve had in years, and I have been looking for any news concerning the new release since I finished it. Well, the wait won’t be much longer. You can pretty much assume it’ll be shown at E3 with this quote from a financial report: “The year’s performance will be led by… Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Just Dance, The Crew and Watch Dogs.” So what kinds of things do you expect to do in the new title? Are you hoping for another offshoot as ridiculous as Blood Dragon?

Since the original post (apparently AS I was writing it this morning), the game was officially announced. Far Cry 4 will be available November 18th in the US and November 20th in the EMEA territories for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Windows PC. It’s being developed by Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Kiev, and more.

The setting is no longer a jungle, but rather the mountains of Kyrat (those mountains would be the Himalayas). In this setting you’ll find a society being ruled by a self-appointed tyrannical king. As before, you’ll have a wide variety of weapons, vehicles, and animals to use while exploring the mysterious lands on your way to … kill the king? Probably the kill the king. But who knows? Maybe you’ll be able to side with him, as Far Cry 3 let you choose your own path.

“Following the success of Far Cry 3, we wanted to take the franchise to the next level and create a game that will surprise players and exceed fans’ expectations,” said Dan Hay, Executive Producer.  “Given the unique setting, we feel Far Cry 4 will stand out as a top first-person shooter and we’re eager to reveal more about the game in the coming months.”

One of the qualities Far Cry 3 had that made it stand out amongst other games were the colors used for the environment. It may be said a lot, but it’s true – the last generation of games were very gritty with browns and greys. Something that makes use of HD graphics in a way that is vibrant and tropical is just wonderful. It had a nice juxtaposition for the story in addition to what it will do to someone. It looks appealing as a destination (hence the party), yet is very dangerous – there were tigers on that island. Forget Vaas, the wildlife would take you DOWN! Based on the cover art, I’d say there will more of that going on here. I can’t wait to see what they do with it.

If you pre-order Far Cry 4 you’ll nab a free upgrade to the Limited Edition, which includes Hurk’s Redemption, a series of three action-packed single-player missions featuring the popular character Hurk that you may remember from Far Cry 3’s DLC.  The Limited Edition also includes Hurk’s signature harpoon gun called “The Impaler”. You can pre-order it from any major retailer.

As I mentioned previously, it will be at E3, so make sure to watch the conferences to get a look at the gameplay and setting. Here’s hoping that if multiplayer is added again, it’s better than last time (honestly, I’d be happy with just a single player experience as good as 3)!
